Windows Explorer crashing

Posted: 07-10-2003, 04:43 AM
Hello there.

Just a quickie to hope that someone out there can help..
I am running XP Pro on a P4 3 ghz with 1 gig ram and 80
gig free hard disk space.

I am having real trouble when I am in windows explorer
and copy a file from one folder and paste it to another
it is ok. Then I copy another file from one folder and
paste it to another folder and that is also fine.
However, when I do it for a third time the explorer
crashes and I lose all of the desktop icons. If I try to
copy another file and the same crash occurs each time.
The only way I can get the icons back is to reboot.

If I do the same copying and paste after 3 times it
crashes once again.

Can anybody please help and give us an idea as to what I
can do to fix this nightmare.

Many thanks for your help and bye for now.
Best regards
Brad

Go to Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors that correspond to when this even occurred, double click the error,
the information inside might give a hint as to the source of the issue. You
might even force the event and then check the Event Log, either way, the
information might help find the source. If you can't decipher it, post it
here. When you double click the event, you will note three buttons,
clicking the third one down will copy the information to the clipboard and
you can paste it into a message to post here.

Sometimes we're able to pick up something definitive, not this time
unfortunately.

Next step, be sure all your drivers are up to date, especially for your
graphics card and soundcard, be sure to visit the device manufacturer's web
site and not rely on Windows Update for this.

If everything is up to date or that doesn't resolve it, check for known or
similar issues at those web sites. The next step would be to remove items
one by one. If you have an external Zip Drive, you might want to disconnect
it and see if that resolve it, printer or scanner, the same, any external
device. If that doesn't resolve it, you may have to remove applications one
by one until you find the offending application. In either case, go one by
one, then after each removal, run the system and test to see if you still
have the problem.

Also, to play safe, do a virus scan on your system.

Windows Explorer crashing
Posted: 07-22-2003, 03:38 AM
Brad,

I am having a similar problem, as are many friends and co-
workers, but only those of us running Windows XP -
everyone I know running Windows 2000 does not have this
problem. Our problem specifically happens more at random
than yours. We will be working along, and suddenly the
entire desktop does a refresh, and all icons dissapear and
reappear. This is especially frustrating because it will
stop all front processes like file copies and close all
windows or views. Any suggestions from anyone out there?
Don't even ask about viruses, we've scanned with half-
dozen programs including trojan/worm scanners.

now needs to close anything you were working on may be
lost' any suggestions? Thank you.

This is very often caused by third-party software, particularly shell
extensions.
