Windows Explorer Stops Responding..........

Whenever I am in Windows Explorer, on my hard drive (C:\)
and (D:\) drives ONLY, when I right click, or click
on "FILE" on the menu bar, Explorer stops responding
(hangs). The only option when this happens is to start
task manager and shut down explorer. I haven't added any
new software, or made any changes to my system lately,
but did recently get rid of Norton Antivirus as it was
slowing my system down tremendously, and actually locked
me out of my system (reason I really uninstalled it).

I am running XP Home Edition Version 5.1.2600 on a Dell
Dimension 2350 with a Celeron 1.7Ghz processor and 256M
of DDR Ram.

Any suggestions on how to get Explorer to start
responding again?

Windows Explorer Stops Responding..........

Mickey, I have searched the postings for this problem,
because I've been having it myself.

According to these replies (& Microsoft), the problem is
a "conflict" between Windows Explorer & Internet Explorer
v.6. And, in order to remedy the problem you have to
UNinstall IE6, and go to an earlier version of IE .. can
you believe that??? TOTALLY UNacceptable!!! in my books.
Why should we have to step backwards, and go to an
UNsecure (& perhaps soon to be unsupported) IE program?

Microsoft should fix this problem (patch??) - ASAP!! Do
they even read these??

I guess that's what we get for upgrading to every new OS
that MicroStupid puts out.....

As for uninstalling IE, I have been there and tried that
before----- it wasn't a pretty site, if you know what I
mean.

Oh well, I'll just have to access my drives from the
Device Manager to accomplish what I could do with one
simple click.

Leave it to Microstupid to put out an OS that isn't even
compatible with their own software.....

Windows XP Home and Pro includes Version 6 of IE. There is no way to
uninstall and reinstall an earlier version.

Microsoft does not advise such and action.

I have a similar Dell desktop that came with XP Home installed, upgraded
with SP1, and have had no troubles with it at all. A virus scan with an
up to date virus definition file may be in order.

The system is virus-free -- that is the first thing I
checked. I am very "virus aware" and keep my system in
tip-top condition, and scanned on a regular basis
(nightly, in fact, in addition to the resident protection
of the AV that has the heuristics set to a very high
security level), so that is not the answer, but thanks
for the input.

Check out the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 319124
"Error Message When You Start Windows Explorer:
Explorer.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be closed by
Windows"

But you are right about IE6 being incorporated with XP ..
because I noticed that even IF I wanted to UNintall IE6, I
could not .. it does not even show up in the Remove
Programs list.
