Windows File Protection

Posted: 07-22-2003, 08:07 PM
I have received a Windows XP message, but before I comply
with it, I need to verify that it is actually a message
from Windows and not from some kind of virus trying to
break my system.

The message is: "Files that are required for Windows to
run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions.
To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the
original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP
Professional CD-ROM now."

Is this a bone fide Windows XP message?

Thank you.

Yes, it is. It means that for some reason, a file that
was installed by Windows was changed or overwritten (and
not by an update).

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the resulting
Command Prompt window, type: SFC /SCANNOW , and hit enter.
You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD in the CD Drive.

SFC = System File Checker. SFC will scan your system and replace missing
or damaged XP system files with the correct version.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B310747

Afterward, perform a "tune-up":

1. Perform a DISK CLEANUP:
(Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup)

2. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the Command
Prompt window type: CHKDSK /F , and hit enter, answer "yes" and
reboot your computer.

3. Afterward, perform a DEFRAG of your hard drive.

Possibly a dumb question: have you tried actually inserting the OS disk and
following the instructions the popup provides? The window should go away at
that point.

WFP prompts you for the OS installation media when it detects that an
important system file has been tampered with or has disappeared. This is
likely the result of installing a non-Windows-compatible application, or
virus damage, so Windows wants to heal itself.

I suspect I may have had a application layer attack or something similar that has altered some system files and added more files as well. Since the name of the files are the same, virus protection software and Stinger does not identify as virus. When I run SFC I get the message to insert original CD which I do and I get a message that it is not valid and the original CD (but it is; it is the only one I have. In registry Source Path is D:\ which is correct. I also tried to delete a system file I thought may be bogus, turned out it wasn't but when I tried to delete I got the message that it was not a Microsoft System file, file had been altered and this may cause applications not to run correctly. Again when I inserted my CD, got the same message that it was not the original. I moved from Win95 to XP Professional so I did not use an upgrade CD, I needed to buy and use the full package. If some of my system files are altered and I can not run SFC, what is my next step?

You can run the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the open box, type sfc /scannow (including space) and then click OK. Note
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

Hope this helps.....

Place the Win XP CD in the CD drive.
When Autoplay starts just click the X and close it.
Click Start button, select Run and type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and
the system should scan for missing/corrupt MS OS files and replace them with the
originals found on the disk.

NOTES -
The Windows File Protection is constantly checking whether important files are
missing or overwritten and restores them if so. Sometimes it can happen that a
file is corrupted anyway, but then one can use the util SFC.EXE with the
/SCANNOW option to do a full scan of the critical files and restore those, which
has become corrupted:
SFC /SCANNOW
Note this operation cannot complete without the install CD. Therefore it is
important to insert the install CD before launching the above command. If the
install path have changed since the original install, then you have to change
the source path so SFC can find the install files.

Note sometimes the WinXP Home will ask for the WinXP Pro CD, but this is not
problem as long the above condition have been met. Though it might require that
one press Retry several times before the System File Checking begins.
