Windows Folder Access

Posted: 10-10-2006, 03:06 AM
Why am I unable to gain "access" to my C:\Windows folder? And by that I mean
why am I not able to copy or move a file to that folder?

I run UltraEdit32 and they provide users with a file to stick into the
Windows folder that makes anything calling on Notepad to open UltraEdit32
instead. Over many versions of Windows this has never been a
problem.......until now. When I tried to copy the UltraEdit file over I was
told I did not have access. I signed back on as Admin and was again told I
did not have access. I dropped to DOS and tried to manually copy it over but
again was refused.

Can anyone tell me how I can ultimately gain control of my Windows folder?

Thanks.

David

Run UltraEdit 32 with Admin rights (not the same as logged in as an Admin).

See if that works any better.

Hi David,

Change permissions on the Windows folder. Users, even administrators, are
locked out otherwise to prevent unwanted software from installing with
elevated privileges.

I tried that, Rick, but the system won't let me change access permissions. I
keep getting an error message every time I try saying "An error occurred
while applying security information to C:\Windows. Access is denied.

Hi Bill....

Not trying to run UltraEdit - simply trying to copy a file to the Windows
folder and the system won't let me copy anything to the windows folder
whether I'm signed on as me or as the Admin.

Hi,

Try disabling UAC first, then logging on as administrator.

I had no trouble changing permissions on the %windir%, and copying a file
to/from it, and it did not require that I disable UAC either. This is on
build 5744, not sure if it applies to earlier builds.
