I have now found the folders. They are not visible in
windows explorer, but when running command.com and
working with dir I find that there are folders
C:\windows\scs\d1 and d2 all the way to d8. Apparently
every time I free up a little space a file is added to
one of these folders. Has anyone heard of anything like
this? If it matters this is a Dell C840 notebook and it
is Windows XP.

Hi, Bill.

My computer is not a Dell or any other brand name, and it's a desktop, not a
laptop. I built it myself.

The point is - I don't have a Windows\scs folder in my WinXP Pro Retail
version. I suspect that it is NOT a Windows file and should not be on your
HD. At least, it should not be inside the \Windows boot folder.

Do you have any idea which program created that folder on your computer?
The first hit on Google for "window\scs" is about Student Computing Services
at the University of California at Riverside.

Someone correct me if this is wrong, but my guess is that
those might be saving settings for System Restore. This is
probably why they are hidden folders, (also a guess) which
is why they don't show in Explorer. From a system window,
go to Tools->Folder Options->View and check "Show all
files and folders", and see if they show up now. If they
are related to system restore, you can limit the amount of
space that system restore uses for backups.
