Windows Installer error

Posted: 08-02-2003, 05:53 PM
I can install most new programs or utilities on my XP
based computer. However I purchased a Microsoft trackball
explorer mouse and cannot install the MS Intellipoint 4.1
software from the CD. I get the following message.
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode,
or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.
Contact your support personnel for assistance."
How can that be if the installer works for other
products?

windows installer error
Posted: 12-09-2003, 05:44 PM
Hi,
I tried to install Adobe Acrobat 6.0 yesterday. The
install shield wizard started okay, but then I got 2
error messages with the window installer:
1."unexpected termination"
2. "the I/O operation has aborted because of either a
thread exit or application request"

I did a lot of the troubleshooting recommended by Adobe
(e.g., turned off virus software, rebooted with startup
items disabled, etc.) as well as talking with Adobe.
They felt that the problem was that the microsoft
installer (msi) was corrupted.

I am running Win XP SP 1 with Office XP Pro. After the
failed acrobat install, I cannot start office programs
(e.g., word, excel, powerpoint, etc.) from the
start>program menus nor by doubleclicking files without
having the programs already running. From the
start>program, I get the following error:"Error
performing inpage operation."

I think I need to reinstall the windows installer, but
don't have any cds since windows xp was preinstalled by
IBM. Any thoughts/suggestions of how to resolve the
situation.

Oh, also, when I tried to "repair" microsoft office on
the add/remove programs, I got the same the same windows
installer errors that I got when trying to install adobe
acrobat. Acrobat 4.0/5.0 install okay but according to
adobe they don't use the wsi.

Go to Start/Run and type: regsvr32 msi.dll
then
Go to Start/Run and type
SFC /SCANNOW
Make sure you have your WinXP CD in the CD Drive before executing the SFC
command.
