Default Windows locator in IPP settings wont stay selected.

I am ahving some trouble trying to connect to the internet. I do not need to
network any other PC's its just the new Vista machine. I have dropped all my
firewalls and have set it to obtain an IP automatically. I am not quite a
novice at this but i am not an expert, so please bear with me.
I found a comment on a forum that said i need to select the windows locator
in the "client for microsoft networks" properties. If i ok that and keep all
the related windows open i can gain access to the net. The second i "ok" any
of the related windows i loose access and when checked, the windows locator
is again not selected.
Can anyone help with this?? I have been trying all sorts out for about 4
days now with no joy!
Thanks for your help in advance.

Default RE: Windows locator in IPP settings wont stay selected.

I am having the same problem. I select the "Windows Locator" in the "Client
for Microsoft Networks" - Properites, but it always looses this adjustment.
Could you fix this problem? HOW?

It could be the 3rd party software. For troubleshooting, start the Vista
with clean boot. Please post back with the result.

I also think that the reason is a 3rd Party Software. I think that Norton
Internet Security caused the problem. It was preinstalled on my new Asus W5Fe
- Vista Business laptop. It was a trial version. I removed it a few days
after I purchased the laptop.
I tried to adjust the "Windows Locator" setting after a "Clean Boot" and
after a "Safe Mode with Neetworking" boot too. No success. Vista always
looses the "Windows Locator" adjustment the same way as after normal boot.
Do you have any other suggestions???

I just love this response!

Any idea how to actually solve the problem???

I have TWO computers with Vista n0tworking i.e. Windows Locator not
staying on.

Dell Laptop, has cable and wireless adaptors, cannot make selection on
either of these adaptors.

Reboots, gp policy enforcement (machines are members of the domain run
on Windows 2003), enabling/disabling adaptors -- everything fails
regarding this issue. All components for IPv6 are disabled.

And by the way I cannot even ping vista machines from network (they
though can ping any xp/2003).

Vista should be nominated for worst network capable OS ever released by
M$, from Windows 3.1 times.

What devices do you have that comprise your network, hubs, routers, modem?
How are they connected? What do you mean "Windows Locator not staying on."

Default Re: Windows locator in IPP settings wont stay selected.

I have a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet card and an Intel
PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection in my notebook. On my notebook I am
using the wireless connection to connect to the DLink DI-624 Router. My
desktop PC is connected to the same router via Ethernet connection. In my
notebook the ethernet card is disabled, and the "Windows Locatior" selection
does not stay selected.
I can send you the ipconfig /all result, but it is in Hungarian language,
the Vista is hungarian.
I have already spent a lot of time searching the internet for the solution
of the "Windows Locator does not stay selected in Vista" problem. A lot of
people have the same problem, but I could not find the solution yet. If
anyone has already found the solution of this error please let us know!
Thanks in advance.

I'm having the same issue on another workstation at home running Vista
Home Basic workstation. Not too sure why the Windows Locator isn't
staying selected. Whenever I go back into Client for Microsoft
Networks Properties, it just doesn't stay selected! (Name Service
Provider box is always blank) I attempted uninstalling and re-
installing Client for Microsoft Networks, all to no avail. Last thing
I tried was booting Vista into Safe Mode with Networking
functionality.. and ironically, it worked. I can browse from Safe Mode
with Networking. Just not anything else. :P

This happened once before, and I remember resolving the problem in
this manner, but now it seems kinda difficult. This problem started
happening last week after a recent batch of Windows Updates on the
workstation. Any further advice for pmozes and I?
