Is Windows Mail the new Outlook Express? Problem accessing account

I'm guessing OE was replaced by Windows Mail? In XP I had my OE set to my
pop3 account. In WM, I thought I set it up correctly, but can't access the
saved mail. (Just my luck if the mail was saved to the HD.)

Anything I can check? Thanks.

Jon,

Windows Mail is the replacement for Outlook Express. Depends on who you use
for your saved mail. If it was Hotmail Plus account or a normal POP
account. If it was a pop account, sorry to say it most likely was saved on
the hard drive of the PC.

Yep - Windows Mail is and has replaced Outlook Express. But feel free to get
confused when Windows Live Mail comes out, then Windows Live Mail Desktop
comes out - because Windows Live Mail won't work with Windows Mail, but the
Windows Live Mail Destkop is specificially made to work with Windows Live
Mail but it's much more advanced then Windows Mail - very strange.

Oh, to get your email messages back, pay me £1,000,000 in used notes to my
offshore bank account... or in Windows Mail, Tools > Options > Maintenance >
Store Folder > Change the folder to that of where the saved mail is

Hi,

Very funny how Microsoft is planning to mock and make comparisons with
Vista about how "crap" and low class Windows Mail is compared to Windows
Live Mail...

I can already imagine MS is going to market Windows Mail very lowly...

And... they are mocking Windows Mail even it is in theory new and took 5
years to develop after OE 6!!!! compared to a "1 year old" product like
Windows Live Mail

yes, windows mail is it now. it is outlook express plus a built in ms news
server and they now tie into mail the passport system. other then this it's
the same thing as OE, but enhanced for vista GUI etc.

There are a lot more changes than that. For one that's really important,
the DBX file format is gone and is replaced by a format that is much more
robust and less apt to lose messages.

That won't work.

The messages are now stored as individual eml files under a directory tree
that matches the folder hierarchy in WinMail. So the inbox messages for
instance are under StoreRoot\Local Folders\Inbox\*.eml where StoreRoot is
defined by the value under "Store Root" under this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

and the default value is:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\

And the files are hidden.

To recover messages from these directories, one needs only to drag the eml
files overtop an OE or WinMail folder to incorporate them into the message
store.

Playing around with changing the location of the message store or trying to
copy files into its location is perhaps doable to some extent, but one can
more appropriately incorporate the messages by dragging and dropping them or
by using the File | Import capabilities.

Note that you can recover messages back into OE6 using this drag and drop
method.
