windows media player 9 defaults to fullscreen

every time i use the player for a video clip the program
immediately goes to fullscreen mode, and the controls
disappear. There is no way to restore the controls either
during or after playback. Further, the fullscreen mode
button is faded. I have restored all defaults in
options/advanced menu...help???
