Windows messenger compatibility mode

This is going to be a little long winded so bear with
me. I just did a full (no previous op sys) install of
Win XP. Then, because of a misunderstanding on my part,
I downloaded and installed MSN Messenger 6.1. When I
found out I could get what I needed (which was
Netmeeting) by setting Win msgr to run in compatibility
mode, I uninstalled MSN msgr (using add/remove pgms). It
uninstalled without any problems. I then set Win msgr up
to run in Win 2K compatibility mode. My problem is I
can't sign in when Win msgr is set for compatibility
mode. I don't get any error messages; I just click
on "Sign In" and it takes about 1 millisecond for
the "Sign In" to come back. I've tried various .Net
passports all with the same result. I have no problem
signing if I leave Win msgr in regular (non-
compatibility) mode.

One more piece of information which may be relevant.
I've got the feeling that the problem I'm having may be
related to my having installed MSN Messenger. Even
though I did an uninstall which executed without a
problem, I searched the registry to see if there were any
remnants. There are a number of entries for "msnmsgr"
and "MSN Messenger". I would have thought the uninstall
would have cleaned them all out so I'm kind of concerned
they're still there.

Would appreciate some help. My goal is to get Windows
Messenger to work in compatibility mode.

Greetings Ken,

It's recommended that you no longer use compatibility mode for Netmeeting usage, instead turn
off compatibility mode, then download and install Windows Messenger 5:

Then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...netmeeting.reg
(if Windows Messenger is running, you'll need to restart it to see the Netmeeting option)

As for MSN Messenger, the uninstallation does *not* remove its entries in the registry,
however both Messenger clients are completely separate of one another and will not conflict
(in the way you're seeing anyway).

Good news, bad news. The good news is your tweak added
Netmeeting to Win Msgr 5.0. The bad news is my online
contacts no longer show up in Outlook Express. Isn't
there some way to get both to work? I just find it so
difficult to believe (probably due to lack of
understanding on my part) why MSFT turned a great
product, namely MSN Messenger, into a mess of problems
with Windows Msgr. Couldn't you have still provided all
the functionality in Win msgr but still left in an
integrated link to Netmeeting?

In case you're wondering, the reason I needed Netmeeting
accessibility is because the voice/camera functions in
Win msgr don't work through my firewall while Netmeeting
does.

One last note, after installing Win msgr 5 and
downloading your tweak, when I went to run Win msgr,
rather than just opening normally, it went through a new
installation and gave me the following error msg: Error
occurred during installation of assembly component.
874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C4DB9B9143D HResult -
2147024864. Did something not install correctly?

You're a god. The reason I was getting the error message
on the install was because there was a hidden copy of
messenger still running even though there was no icon in
the systray. Once I shut that down, the install went
without a hitch and I now have both Netmeeting showing
and my contacts in Outlook Express. Can't thank you
enough for your expert help. I wasted a good 3 hours on
this problem before I contacted the newsgroup.
