Windows Photo Editor

Posted: 10-20-2004, 02:07 AM
Hi. I just updated with SP2, and now when I go to view my photos in "My
Pictures," when I click on the button on the bottom of the window that says
"Close this and open this picture for editing," it opens up Paint. It used
to open the photos up for editing with Microsoft Photo Editor, which I
prefer. Please let me know how to get this fixed, so that when I click
"close and edit" it will open up Microsoft Photo Editor.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\she ll\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.

When I open a picture in the Windows Picture Viewer and click on the
"Editing" button (Close this program and opens the image for editing CTRL+E)
the program/window indeed closes, but the editor doesn't launch.
Any idea why and how to fix it?

Thank you.

A very old problem. Reported here many times as you did.
No solution ever posted.
Nobody knows why this happens.
The way around it is to stop using it. Instead, right click on the photo and
then click Open with and select the software you want on the displayed list.
Or if you want to edit many pictures, start your photo editing software and
then open the photo files you want to change.

If the image editor is already set and if the problem persist, verify if a shell extension is causing the problem.

See: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm Ignore the title.
Follow method 2 in that article - Using ShellExView.

John,

Follow the shellexview part in that page. That helps you identify the contextmenu handler which _may_ be causing the problem.

Maybe it work if you copied the image files
to your Shared Documents / My Pictures folder
under My Computer?
