You don't say what the file type is but, assuming it is a JPEG, try
right-clicking on a .jpg file in Windows Explorer, then click Choose Program
from the bottom of the menu, choose Paintshop Pro and tick the box for
"always use this program..". This should work. It has for me with JPEGs (and
Tiffs which also default to the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer). It's easier
than going into the registry. I have never had much success using the file
associations dialog with JPEGs.

I have recently started using XP Home Office, and I am
having a lot of trouble customising it for my use.
One of the many things that I find annoying is the fact
that when I am in 'my documents' and I click on a photo,
it automatically opens using 'windows picture and fax
viewer'.
I would much prefer to use the photo software I've always
used. How can I get the photos to open automatically using
my software and not windows'?
I know I can open my software and then open my pics from
there, but there must be a way to change from windows?

Try this...open an image folder and right click one
of your image files...choose..."Open With"..on the
menu that pops up...select "Choose Program".

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list. Once you
make your selection...be sure to check the box
that says: "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

Also...in WinXP, you can go to...My Computer /
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...

GDI PLUS is a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) that helps you
view your images. It exists inside a folder called
C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_65 95b64144
ccf1df_1.0.10.0_x-ww_712befd8 and
C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_65 95b64144
ccf1df_1.0.0.0_x-ww_8d353f13. I have kept my copy of it @
my webspace
(http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/xneowo....dir=/SharedFi
les&.view=l) so you can copy it.

=======Directions========

1) Copy the GdiPlus---1 file, rename it GdiPlus and copy
it to to
C:/Windows/WinSxS/x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_6595b64144
ccf1df_1.0.0.0_x-ww_8d353f13 directory.

2) Copy the GdiPlus file and put it in
the /x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0 .10
..0_x-ww_712befd8 directory

Hope it helps,

I used to be able to open and preview .jpg files e-mailed
to me before downloading them. However, now, whenever I
attempt to open and view such a .jpg file, Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer says "no preview available". The
only way I can view the pictures is to download the files
and then open them. I'm not sure how to fix it. Can
anyone help? Thanks

Maybe this KB article will lead to
a solution:

(326675) "No Preview Available" and "File Format Is Not Supported"
Error Messages Occur When You Try to View Graphic Files
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;326675

The following link could be useful also:

Go to the following site and scroll
down to the bottom of the page.
