Windows Update for XP Sound card that was optional update

Posted: 09-29-2006, 10:15 PM
HAve just downloaded the latest optional sound card update from the website.
However now XP has no volume control slider. It also reset to default the
welcome screens and caused a specialist visual impairment programme to loose
contact with its drivers.

Not impressed Mr. Gates's development team. How can I restore the volume
control or get the system to recognise the sound module which it now does
not. The specialist programme you caused to loose its drivers was Zoom Text
v.7

The driver updates are supplied to Microsoft, and then included in Windows
update in all good faith that they actually work.. The experience of most
users is that updating drivers in this way is NOT a good idea.. go to
Control Panel - System, select the sound card icon, and roll back the
drivers to a previous version, or do a system restore back to the point
where everything was ok..

Always download hardware drivers from the appropriate manufacturer; not
Micrsoft, unless they made the hardware.

I would agree but sometimes the updates only appear on Microsoft site. Ess
fax update is one of these. The sound card was another. Why the Volume
control has disappeared from the operating system doesnt make sense.
