Windows update stops printing?

Posted: 09-13-2003, 12:39 AM
In the last few days I used the windowsupdate to update my Windows XP.
Since that upgrade I have been unable to print from most of my applications.
The only applications that will allow printing are Adobe Acrobat and MS
Access. If I convert my documents to Adobe Acrobat format, they will print
from Acrobat 6.0. Otherwise, besides MS Access nothing else prints. I get
one of two things that happens when I try to print
1. I get a printer error:
ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: ==image (or nostringval or PScript_WinNT_Inc)
2. Nothing happens. The file goes to the printer, but nothing happens.

So, did the latest XP Security update screw up my printing? My Windows 2000
Server and my Macintosh OSX 10.1 both still print to the same network
printer without skipping a beat.

Setup:
OS: Windows XP Pro with all latest updates
Office 2002 Pro(10.xxxx.3501)
Acrobat Pro 6.0

Printer:HP Laserjet 6MP with latest drivers
printing through an HP JetDirect EXPlus box.

Any ideas of how I might cure this problem? Anyone else reporting the same
problem?

Thanks for any information.

Same thing! I downloaded virus patch, and, BOOM, no HP
6MP. However, I can print to the HP 5550 connected through
the same USB hub. So far no response from Dell or
Microsoft. Hmmmm.

Start, Run (type) sfc /scannow (enter)

see if this fixes the problem.

No it didn't fix the problem, but thanks for the suggestion. As an
additional point of confusion, when I Open the properties tab of the printer
and ask it to print a test page, it prints a correct test page. The
computer just cannot communicate from within an application, except for
Adobe Acrobat. So how do I back out the Microsoft latest "upgrade", short
of reinstalling Windows XP?

Windows update stops printing?

Dick,

I have a HP Laserjet 6L. I also loaded the latest XP
update last Wednesday or Thursday. Since then I have
been unable to print from the XP machine. My laptop
running Windows 98 prints fine to the Laserjet 6L. Of
course Microsoft will deny that XP is the problem!

I just went in and restored my system to 8 Sept 03 (2-3
days before I loaded the latest XP updates). Laserjet 6L
works fine now. Only downside is that you don't have the
XP security patches.

To restore:

START
ALL PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEMTOOLS
SYSTEM RESTORE
Pick "to restore to a date"
hit next
a calendar comes up and you can pick a date.

The restore doesn't affect any data files created after
the date you pick, only system files.

Don,

How is your Laserjet 6L connected to your system? That is, do you use a
print server such as one of the HP JetDirect External Boxes or Internal
Cards or are you just connected directly to the XP machine?
