| I´m running Windows Vista Beta 2 on my PC. I have a Brother HL 2040 Laser printer connected to my PC via USB. I have tried to install the printer with the "built-in" Windows Vista driver as well as with the Windows XP driver that came with the printer. None of the drivers really seem to work on my PC. With the "Built-in" Vista driver the installation-process seems to work OK. and at the end of the installation i receive the message, "You should be able to use the printer now" But when trying to print I immediately receive the message "The printer is in an error state". The XP driver installation aborts before the installation process is ended. This is also the case, even if I uninstall the Windows Vista driver before trying to install the Win XP driver. I am (trying) to install the printer on USB002 Virtual printer Port for USB. On port 1 I have installed my HP Deskjet 920C that works fine with the Win Vista driver. Would it be possible, that any of the other Brother-drivers (in Windows Vista) for other Brother printers could work on my HL 2040 ??? Thanks for reply. | Guest

| You raise a good point. I would call Brother support because there are certainly situations where printer drivers will work from both Brother and HP for Brother printers but it's best to use a Brother driver because they are more easily corrupted over time. I am running a Brother Printer HL--5140 with no problems on Vista, but you should follow these tips in trying to install the driver from the Brother site that might get it up and running: 1) I have noticed that how you install the driver matters--browsing to the location of the driver folder (often full of files) matters. 2) Making sure that you get the hdw recognized--and Vista is more perceptive and nuanced at this than XP has been first (so it's easier in Vista) is important before installing a driver. In XP whenever I heard "printer trouble" on a group and "16 bit subsystem error) a "false positive, I knew that the poster had reversed these steps. 3) Going to the printer folder, right clicking that printer, and going to the "Accessories" tab and making sure you have the "driver configured" yes I typed "driver configured" because that's exactly what you do there correctly is all important. This is after you get the driver in, of course and I think that step #1 is very key to getting some drivers into Vista. 4) Go to Printer Folder>Rt. Click Brother>Properties>Accessory Tab Highlight Tray 1 under paper source setting>paper size (letter)>default source is tray 1>click update Highlight Manual under paper source setting> Paper Source Setting: Tray 1 Undefined Manual Undefined Paper Size: Letter Default Source Tray 1 Good luck, CH "HOS1972" <HOS1972@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:51FE26D0-0AC2-4631-9AB7-4C3FEB4CE4E5@microsoft.com...
