Windows Vista Ultimate continuous beep on boot

Posted: 08-08-2008, 02:27 AM
Hi everyone - here's hoping you can help!. I have a Windows Vista
(Ultimate SP 1) Hp Pavilion Desktop (Intel Core duo CPU/3gb Ram/
Bios American Megatrends Graphics 512 mb Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT)
which yesterday suddenly produced a long continuous beep on booting
with an hourglass in a dark screen and would go no further. I am
able to get into Safe mode and have run some HP Diagnostics which
seem to indicate that the Drive and RAM are ok.
Could someone please give me some advice as to how to proceed from
here.I am not to sure how to add back the various drivers in Safe
Mode. The computer is only 4 months old so still under warranty but
I would prefer not to have to go back to factory settings (as the HP
Helpdesk are probably going to make me do) if at all possible.
Everything seems to be functioning ok in Safe Mode - there are 3
exclamation marks in the device manager: 1.under Mirosoft Issatap
Adapter #2 (under Network Adapters) 2. Under Consumer I/R devices in
System Devices and 3.Under USB controllers eHome Infrared Receiver
USBCIR - however the keyboard and mouse work fine in safe mode - as
does the internet hence my post.I have a UPS power attached to the
computer which appears to be functioning normally.
I have downloaded all the windows updates regularly and have updated
the NVidia card also. A system restore has not resolved the problem
and the computer was running fine the night before this happened.
Your help would be much appreciated. Sue G

and in particular:

Personally I'd start with reseating the graphics card.

I posted but there wasn't a continous 1 long beep for AMI. My gut
feeling is that it is the graphics card as I have had a few
problems playing some games etc (no cursor especially in Full
Screen) and sometimes the text jumps around in windows (especially
scrolling windows) but was fixed on reboot. I actually am not
comfortable in opening up the computer myself (always full of static
and not knowledgeable enough).Do I void my warrranty if I get a
trained techie just to check the seating of my cards?
The weird thing is that I have now done a System Restore from Safe
mode back to 4 August and it started up perfectly - no beeps normal
screen etc - then a system message popped up to tell me that Safe
Mode had not succeeded and that the restore point may have been
damaged or deleted in the process! At the moment it seems to be fine
but I would dearly love to find out what caused the issues - could
the graphics card cause intermittent problems? One other thing is
that immediately before this happened the computer had woken itself
out of sleep and the hard disk was active. I tried Task Manager to
see what proccess had woken it (as I had disabled all the usual wake
on LAN etc) but all the text was jumping about so much in Task
Manager that I restarted - I have since found that maximizing the
window seems to settle the jumping text. It was on the restart that
I got the continous beep. I use "Sleep" mode a lot and find that
some things stop responding after a couple of days but are usually
fixed by a reboot or restart.I have been unable to find any reports
to tell me what woke up my computer or why the long beep happened.
Sorry about all the questions but I would like to find the cause and
fix it.I live in a country area of NSW Australia and it would be a
bit of a pain to have to return the computer to base. Sue G

Apologies if I multiposted - not exactly sure what that entails - I
accidentally sent the initial message to windows vista security
group and thought I had cancelled it immediately - Safe Mode was
making it quite hard for me to see what I was doing.

Hi Sue,

Multiposting is sending the exact same message to multiple groups
separately, some of which may or may not be relevant to your problem. Use of
a newsreader as opposed to web forums would allow you to crosspost
appropriately if more than one group is relevant, but often it's not
necessary. Crossposting is sending a single message to multiple groups by
placing all the group addresses in one header, others all see it as the same
message and it is marked appropriately.

As to your issue, a long continuous beep is usually caused by a video card
that is not properly seated in its motherboard slot. Shut down the machine,
disconnect the power, open the cabinet and ground yourself, then remove and
reseat it.

Thanks Rick - as I said my multi post to Windows Vista security was purely
accidental - thanks to Safe mode I couldn't properly see the group name at
the bottom of the window while I was composing it. I usually open several
groups at once and should have double-checked - if I was going to multipost
or preferably cross post it would have been to Windows Vista General not
Security!!. I hit "cancel" almost immediately but alas was caught out!!I'm
using XNews not the web forums but have hardly ever posted before.
For some reason System Restore seems to have fixed the problem -but thanks
for you help anyway. Sue G

Hi Sue,

I'd still reseat the card, as the problem stems from a hardware issue, not
the operating system.
