It's very "iffy". If Microsoft buys your story, they'll
re-activate it for you, but they're under no obligation
to. Question: Do you buy the seller's story?
Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

*If* it's a retail version, not an OEM version, and *if* it's no
longer on the PC it used to be on, it's true. Whether those "ifs"
are true, nobody can tell you. The seller may not know that you
can't legally move an OEM version, he may not know the difference
between an OEM version and a full retail version, or he may be
lying through his proverbial teeth. Or he may be telling you the
complete truth. It's a matter of whether you trust him or not.
Personally I wouldn't take the risk.

2) what number at Microsoft I should call,

That's never a problem. When you activate it, if normal
activation over the internet fails because it was activated
during the past 120 days, you'll be then given the 800 number to
call.

and 3) if there will be any charge for re-activating the
software?

No, there's never a charge like that.

Neither of your last two questions should be a concern. Question
1 is a big concern; as I said, I wouldn't take the risk.

Part of the problem is that the risk isn't worth taking unless
the price is very low, and the savings therefore substantial. But
the lower the price, the less likely the deal is to be
legitimate.

Windows XP activation

I agree with bob and ken, it is very very iffy. I did a
lot of reseach on how the activation works and all that
stuff a while ago. I apologize to say but if I was
Microsoft I wouldn't believe it. The only SURE way that
you could know Microsoft would allow this would be to
call them before you buy XP off Ebay and explained that
you wanted to buy it from ebay and explain what the other
person said and ask if they would give would give you
trouble activating it when you got it. The phone number
is listed on this page,
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/r.../vol/numbers.a
sp. Good luck.

Avoid the e-bay deal.

That one particular deal probably should be avoided like the it was a
disease, but that is generally not true of an established dealer.
