Windows XP curser problem

I have a Sony Viao. Since upgrading from Win 98 to XP, my
curser jumps around in all word processing functions
regardless of software. I have downloaded XP upgrades for
my USB port mouse. I have all current Win XP upgrades.
nothing has worked. Help!
