Windows XP Setup from DOS Boot Disk

Posted: 07-07-2003, 05:30 PM
I am trying to install Windows XP from a network share
using a DOS 6.22 boot disk and a hard disk that is not
formatted. I want to basically use the Windows XP setup to
partition the drive and than setup using the network
share. I am able to boot and connect to the network share
using the boot disk, however Windows XP prompts that it
needs space for a swap file. My question is how does
booting from the Windows XP CD-ROM over come this if the
hard disk is not formatted?

Thanks,

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

To use winnt.exe, you need to use fdisk (or similar) to partition the
drive, reboot, and then run "format" to format the C:\ drive.

See <http://unattended.sourceforge.net/> for a system which automates
this for you.

There is no other way unless you want to use WinPE.

Try using FreeDOS format with the "/q" switch. I have used it to on
partitions up to 40G and it never takes longer than two or three
seconds.
