Hi Pasquale,

I was looking for an answer to the same problem. Same version number Vista.
Same error code 0x8024400a when I check for updates for both Vista and
Windows Defender.

I had same problem and this helped

-Stop the "Windows update" service.
-Create a new directory "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old"
-Move contents of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" into that new folder
(cut & paste)
-Start "Windows update" service.

Now update should work again. At least for me it did.

You can delete the .old folder
