WindowsXP nt backup

Posted: 11-20-2003, 11:48 PM

I would like to back up selected files AUTOMATICALLY from
my C: drive to a second hard drive installed for this
specific purpose utilizing MicrosoftXP's "nt backup," but
am experiencing difficulty with the setup.

The two internal hard drives and my one external hard
drive are not recognized by nt backup as backup devices
and I am not given the "File" option, ala "BackUp My PC."
My reading of what documentation I have found and these
forums suggest I can indeed do this, so would somebody
explain to me "how"?

Referencing any and all Microsoft KB's [for that matter,
ANY reference material] as well as guidance from somebody
who has actually done it would be most appreciated.
Thank-you.
Ron

P.S. I apologize for posting to multiple forums, but the
subject is referenced at no less than seven [7] sites...

You should be able to do this by opening backup program
click on advanced wizard will want to copy to A: instead
browse and select the drive you want further along and
different tabs, to set schedules etc. I know you can make
complete backup I did it to another partition on drive but
have since gone to ghost since xp home is not a bootable
backup. If you have home you will probably have to
reinstall windows on one drive to access your backup on
the other. Hope this helps.

>Thanks Lou, you have given me yet another piece of the
puzzle, but would you explain in more detail what you
meant by: "If you have home you will probably have to
>reinstall windows on one drive to access your backup on

With regard to the Wizard wanting "to copy to A:," with
the first click, I get a request for the file name before
possibly being allowed to browse. Does that sound right?

I appreciate your help. Thank-you. Ron

P.S. I will be checking for a reply, but it may be
Saturday PM at the earliest before I could respond to it,
if indicated...

Ron if you put backup on D: (system failure occurs) you
will have to install windows on existing partition C: (if
it reformats harddrive, sets up new partition C: backup
could be lost) also add backup utility from value added
section of xp cd before you can access backup utility on
C: to be able to go to D: where your backup files are. As
far as browsing for location for backup open backup
utility first popup select (click on advanced mode) in
advanced mode select backup wizard advanced click next,
backup everything , on third window should say chose a
place for backup A: will appear next to it hit browse
there you can select D: from dropdown window.

Best Suggestion:
Go to pricegrabber find Norton Utilities 2003 Professional
should be able to find really cheap this has ghost in it
that will make a bootable backup (burn backup to cd's) a
much easier, quicker, option for having a backup than what
xp backup utility can do for you.

That must be a good piece of software as it has been
recommended to me before. Thank-you. Ron
