WinPE unsupported NIC ?

With generous help from this newsgroup I have built and deployed some simple
test systems on Dell PCs and one brand of cPCI SBC. I am currently evaluating
two other cPCI SBCs that have Intel 100/1000 NIC chips. When I boot WinPE,
after the "factory -minit" command is issued I get a popup box saying:
Failed to install network adapter -- check WINBOM
I have interpreted this message as meaning that WinPE does not have a driver for
the NIC chip. I found an article posted in this newsgroup on 21Mar2003 by
Richard Mahn that describes how to build a custom WinPE CD. I followed those
directions and included the .inf and .sys files for my NIC chip according to the
posting. However I get the same message when I boot with the custom CD.

Questions - What is the popup box really telling me? Am I doing the right thing
to solve this problem? If not what should I do next?

If the intention is to get a good PMQ file, it would be of greater benefit
(IMHO and easier) to just install XP Pro on the system and then run TAP. I
have found that running TAP under WINPE will not find some of the more
"obscure" hardware. I have an Intel workstation board that under WINPE could
not find the appropriate SCSI driver. Under TAP, it works.
Just my $.02 worth.

Roger,

I searched the old posts and only saw references to Bart's PE Builder. This
has since been removed at MS's request. It is best to obtain the Windows XP
OPK, and follow the instructions posted by Doug Hoeffel awhile back.

At this point I only have the eval edition of XPe. Is that enough to
follow Doug Hoeffel's procedure? I don't know what the "Windows XP OPK"
is.

Roger:

OPK stands for OEM Preinstallation Kit. My company has the OPK because we
are a certified OEM builder or something like that. The actual CD was a
TechNet CD.
