From what you write, I assume you ran the compatibility utility, right?This could well be a bad/incompatible video driver. Try booting into Safe
Mode (hold F8 while booting into Windows) and change the video driver to
"VGA". Reboot normally and if it comes up (butt ugly graphics in this mode),
you will know the problem and go get the latest video drivers from your mfr
(or replace video card if all else fails).

Are you running and Nvida AGP graphics card? I had theexact problem till I removed it and used an old PCI
2meg "Number Nine" I had from eons ago. Windows XP then
installed perfectly. After it was running, I then
switched cards and it found and ran fine with Nvidia card
ever since. I had this happen on to seperate machines
running different Nvida cards.

That's exactly what happened. I removed the Nvidia cardand used the integrated graphics and it installed great.
I'll try reinstalling the AGP card later. Thanks for the
help.
