Wired & Wireless Combo Home Network

Posted: 04-25-2007, 04:40 AM
I have a Home Theater PC that runs Vista and I want to set it up to connect
to our office PC that runs XP. I have the HTPC connected to the wired cable
modem and to the wireless router. The office pc connects to the internet
fine with the wireless connection, but I cannot get the two computers to
connect! :P

I am trying to set up a network like the one mentioned here
(http://www.intel.com/personal/how-to...d-wireless.htm) But of
course the directions are for XP and I need to set this up on my Vista
machine and I cannot figure it out for the life of me! Most tutorials that I
find online for Vista networks are for 100% wired or 100% wireless networks..
can someone please help me set up this combo network?

You can also email me at soadchik (at) aol (dot) com

Thanks in advance

Sumati,

Can you get the Vista computer connected to the Internet? That's the first
task. When it connects to the Internet, you will know that you have
connectivity. Then you work on the Vista / XP combo, and that will be the same
for WiFi / Ethernet as for Ethernet / Ethernet.

When the Home Theater computer can connect to the Internet:
* Set the Network Location Type to "Private". This implies that your
computers are secure, behind a perimeter firewall or a NAT router, and opens the
personal firewall for file sharing.
* Check / set "Password protected sharing" (PPS). Disabling PPS is the
equivalent of enabling Simple File Sharing, in Windows XP.
* Setup shared folders and printers. If you enabled PPS, you should setup
access for individual users. If you disabled PPS, you setup access for "Guest"
or "Everyone".

And check issues which involve both XP and Vista, on both computers!
* Make sure that NetBT is Enabled consistently.
* Make sure that any third party firewalls are properly setup.
* Make sure that name resolution is consistently setup.
