Wireless Configuration in Vista Home Premium

Posted: 06-12-2007, 03:01 AM
I've got Dell E521 Desktop with Vista Home PRemium and I'm trying to use a
Netgear WG121 USB Adapter to connect to my router, but when I try to pen the
Netgear configuration utility it opens for about 2 seconds and closes. I
suspect that the windows network configration utility is checked off and
controlling the wireless connection but I can't find it anywhere in Vista.

Can anybody help me find it.

Thanks

Terry

Mac,

Looked at that, but nothing shows about turning of the configuration utility.

Should find it under Control panel, then Network and Internet, then you go
to Networking, you should find what you are looking for there.

I'm sorry. I just got Vista and I am trying to figure it out on the fly. I
don't understand why the Netgear console comes up for only like 2 seconds and
then disappears, unless its the windows network configuration utility or is
it called that in Vista (that's the name in XP). I have clicked on every
button that I can find in the Network section of Control Panel and even
turned off WLAN Configuration Manager (services.msc) with no luck. What am I
missing?

No, sorry, the WG121 is not compatible with Vista and Netgear has no plan to
produce a Vista compatible driver for it.

Best bet is to store it somewhere or sell it on eBay.

Disgraceful isn't it?

Gareth.

Gareth,

Thanks. After looking over the Netgear website, I kind of came to that
conclusion and I've ordered a new pci adapter THAT IS Vista compatible. I
guess that's what you get with a NEW operating system.

I'm not so sure - the WG121 was being sold and marketed as late as 2005 so I
don't think it's unreasonable to expect Netgear to spend a couple of hours
(at most) of programming time for a Vista driver update. But then again
maybe it's part of the problem once you make the choice to upgrade.

Just out of interest why did you go for a PCI adapter instead of a USB one?
Which USB adapter did you go for?

Gareth.

Gareth,

I got the Netgear WG311T PCI Adapter. I got the PCI Adapter as I've had
issues in the past with USB ones being sometimes being finiky and the WG311T
is a good, solid adapter for a low price. It offers high speed & long range.

Thanks. Being in the same situation as you I may go for the WG311T myself.
I've always found Netgear adapters to be very good - it does irritate me
that I gave to bin a perfectly good USB adapter (one of the best I've ever
used).

Gareth.
