Wireless Connection Problem

Posted: 09-10-2007, 04:18 PM
I am having a wireless connection problem with two brand new HP 6415CA
laptops running VISTA Home Premium that I just purchased. The problem seems
the same as many posts here, but not being overly technical I can’t figure
out from the responses if this problem has a Microsoft fix or other solution
or not.

What I am hoping for in layman’s terms is to know if there is a solution to
this problem and if so how do I correct it.

The problem is that I have been able to create an auto logon wireless
connection, but like other people have experienced, out of the blue it will
stop working and will show that it’s status is local only, instead of local
and internet. Restarting, shutting down doesn’t usually change it, nor does
repair fix it, nor does deleting and recreating the network connection. Then
out of the blue it will start working again, only to go away again.

The wireless router has been in for some time and is working fine with 2
other laptops that I have (both HP), running XP. When the new laptops
encounter this problem the other 2 XP laptops continue to run normally.

If I plug the 6415`s directly into one of the Linksys Ethernet ports they
work fine.

The two new 6415 laptops have the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG interface. They
are connecting to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be the wireless incompatible with the Vista, If XP works and wired works, it doesn't guaranty to work with Vista. Have you check the router or wireless NIC firmware and driver? Have you install MS update? These links may help too.

Wireless connection problem

Can anyone help me with the internet connection problems I am having?. I am
using a inspiron E1505 purchased in June 2007 using Windows Vista Ultimate.
It is using a Intel Next-Gen Wireless N . I was having no problem
connecting to the internet with our home wireless router until this week,
when upgraded the router to a Linksys WRT 300n version 1.1 router with a
secured network. The new router has 2 desktops hard wired and then we also
have an XPS 1330 laptop with Vista Home premium connecting. All of these
computers are connecting with no difficulty.

On the E1505, the computer locates the secured network and when it connects
it says it is successful. However, I am unable to connect to the internet.
When I go to the network and sharing center, it lists the connection as our
network with excellent signal strength. But at the top of the page it lists
the network as an unidentified network (public network) and then has a large
red X between the network and internet symbols. When I click on the red X,
the diagnosis says that it cannot communicate with the primary DNS server.
The Windows firewall is turned off.

I worked with Linksys, for several hours this afternoon. They checked all
of the router settings and checked the ipconfig information on the computer.
They were unable to locate any problems and suggested that I contact Dell.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try to change the public network to private network first. Or this link may
help too.

Vista issuesthe Vista laptop has limited connectivity to "Unidentified
network". The XP desktop says that the network cable isn't even plugged in.

Make a reset on your WLAN router and then reconfigure it exactly according
to the manual. If they provide a wizard, use it. Also configure your network
adapter. Prefer to choose DHCP on the router and configure the adapter with
automatic adressing. Do you detect the network under the properties of the
adapter? If not, you have to add it.

Axel, I have the same experience on my Vista laptop and your suggestion
doesn't work. My children are using three other XP laptops and a printer all
connected wirelessly without any internet connection problems whatsoever.
Looking at the various Microsoft forums I've been trawling through over the
past few days in search of an answer I'd suggest this problem is being
experienced by quite a few Vista users. I've tried many suggestions like
removing the Norton anti-virus software and using static IP addresses all to
no avail. Strange thing is that the Vista laptop can see and use the other
devices on the network (printer and NAS) which suggest the wireless
connection is working okay. Something in Vista is preventing access through
to the Internet. If it were the router the other devices wouldn't be
working. As Mike said in an earlier postin, connecting the laptop with an
ethernet cable works straight away so again this suggests there's no issue
with DHCP settings on the router. Would appreciate any advice you can give.

I'm using Vista Home Premium, and trying to get it to connect wirelessly to a
router. As far as I can tell, the router is functioning absolutely fine, as
I am connecting with no problem from another laptop using Windows XP. Also,
the laptop with Vista is recognising the router, as it is showing up as one
of the available networks. I have also put the correct security key into the
Vista laptop. But, it will not connect - every time I try, it tells me that
Windows is not receiving any response from the router. Is there something
obvious I am missing?

Thanks

Chris
