Wireless netwok with win XP and win 98 machine

Posted: 08-07-2003, 08:26 PM
I have a two computer network with the Win xp computer
cabled to a Linksys ccess Point/Router and the Win 98
having a Linksys Wireless Card.

Both computers have full working access to the Internet
w/o problems. Both computers know which workgroup they
belong to and show themselves as members of the workgroup.

The win xp computer has had the Network wizard run many
times and generated the netseup disk for the other
machine. The win98 machine has run the netsetup program
many times.

Neither computer knows about the other computer. Both show
only themselves as memebers of Ronsgroup (the workgroup
name)

Linksys said they believe that there is a compatability
issue between XP and Win 98. I can't find any reference to
this in the KnowledgeBase.

Anyone have a suggestion?
Thx
Ron Small

P.S. If a responder can manage to email me any suggestions
in addition to posting it , it would be welcome.

P.P.S. Prior to the above reported problem, the Windows XP
machine couldn't access the workgroup at all. Getting a
message that it didn't have the appropriate permissions.
I solved that in the short run. I uninstalled my firewall
software and redid everything without a firewall to get to
the point mentioned above. Anyone have any idea what
things need to be specially permitted in the firewall to
avoid this second issue.

Ron - I have the exact same physical setup as do you. I
can access the Internet on both machines. I have enabled
file-sharing on both machines and disabled the firewall
on the Win Xp computer. I have been able to access the
files on the Win 98SE computer from my Win Xp computer. I
have not been able to access files on the Win Xp computer
from the Win 98SE computer. The Win Xp computer is
listed in the "My Network Places" on the Win 98SE
computer but clicking on it generates a error message
saying that the connection does not exist! There may be
a compatibility issue but I wanted to let you know that
the Win Xp computer can connect to the the Win 98SE
computer over a Linksys broadband router.
