Wireless network: I can't have internet and Network between computers?

Posted: 07-28-2003, 04:37 PM
I've just set up my house with a wireless network. The
internet works on all computers, but when (i have windows
xp by the way) i clicked the option of creating a home
office network between the computers to share files and
use one printer, but then it screwed up my internet
connection. It has something to do with the IP
configuration i think. Could you help me have internet on
all computers, but still be able to use one printer and
transfer files easily?
Thanks,
Mark

Oh also, for wireless, do all computers have to be on to
have connection and not just the modem and router?

Mark - If your wireless network contains a Wireless Access Point (WAP), you
can either set the WAP as the "edge" of your network (connect it's WAN port
to your broadband modem) or you can use two network cards in your PC
(Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)).

If your WAP is UPnP enabled (look for the logo on the device or the original
box - The Microsoft MN-500 is UPnP enabled). Then I would use it as the
edge of your network. If you are using Dial-Up or your new WAP is not UPnP
enabled you should consider using ICS.

You should configure the WAP to be a DCHP Server and a NAT (these are
usually the default settings). Then configure each of the PC's in your
house as DHCP Clients.

If you run the Network Setup Wizard (NSW) on your XP machine it will guide
you through the process of configuring the PC's and can create a setup disk
to run on old OS machines as well. You can access the NSW by running
Control Panel then select "Network and Internet Connections". Select the
third task "Setup of change your home or small office network".
