WMP error - "The Source filter for this file..."

While at work, I want to stream music via WMP. When I find a station I want
to listen to, I usually get a message that says "The source filter for this
file could not be loaded" or "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The
file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the file you are trying
to play". It sounds like I need to load something in order for WMP to
recognize these types of stations. What's weird is that there are two
stations I do not have problems with. One is a music station and the other
is NPR (which is a little boring but better than silence).

Does anyone have any insight as to what is causing that error message and
how I can correct it?

IBM Thinkpad T42 Laptop
Windows XP - Ver 2002 SP2
WMP Ver 9.00.00.3354

Stations that work:
30 000tunes
NPR

Stations that do not work:
..977
100htiz
....and most others
