Won't install

Posted: 10-27-2007, 05:38 AM
I am trying to install a Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade over my Windows
XP - there are a few possible compatability issues but it said none that
would cause any problems. It continues on and when it gets to gathering file
- I get an error message "Windows installation encountered an error and
cannot continue"............any ideas???

Won't install

1. What are the "possible" compatibility issues?

2. What, besides XP operating System, programs do you have installed on your
computer?

3. What are the hardware specifications of your computer:CPU, RAM, Graphics,
etc?

Hi Rositam,

It is hard to say without knowing the complete error meesage. It
usually is a BIOS that needs to be updated. See this link to help sort
through the error.

'Troubleshooting Stop error messages that may occur when you try to
install Windows Vista' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935806)

You might be better off doing a clean install from the upgrade version
to help prevent possible problems later. This tutorial will show you
how.

Shaun, I have Vista Home Premium on a 5yo Packard Bell.
I have never upgraded the BIOS in it.
It used to run XP Pro, but I do clean installs.
And my customers don't have to upgrade BIOS.

First off...if there are compatability issues...it will more than likely be
a problem.
If your XP installation is working fine then you should not take a chance of
ruining it by upgrading to Vista.

If you insist on going with Vista then you need to back up your data and
perform a clean install (rather than an upgrade)

You need to look at the log file setuperr.log, located at
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

and tell us what it says.

Could it perhaps be the same problem that I encountered?:

Compatbility issues are: Microsoft Interactive Training, Microsoft
IntellitypePro 6.01, Winfax Pro 10, Windows Messenger, Rhapsody in programs;
and Samsung ML 1740, MWL Filter Miniport McAfee, NVIDIA n Force Netwroking
Controller, and ADS D press DX2 in the don't know if you'll have issues.
Programs I have installed are McAfee (most recent one) Winfax Pro, Advanced
Windows Care 2 Professional, Nero, Office Suite 2007, Spyware Doctor, Adware
SE Personal............My computer is HP Pavilion, AMD Athlon (m) 64x2, Core
Processor 5000+, 219Ghz, 1.93 GB Ram....hopefully that covers it? I am not
technically capable - just a home user that has a little "dangerous"
knowledge!

That's an interesting one.
Firstly, I'd probably not be too keen to attempt the upgrade with some of
the products you have installed on the machine, also be aware that software
which is reported as "incompatible but will not prevent upgrade", may be a
P.I.T.A to remove/fix after the upgrade, so best to get rid of anything that
nests itself deep within the system that's reported as incompatible.

In particular I would not be happy about attempting the upgrade when part of
McAfee is being reported as incompatible, so see if you can remove this MWL
Filter MiniPort driver.

Back to your problem. This is just a standalone computer, not part of a
domain (corporate network), right?

What's the user account you're logging on with, and what's the computer's
name?

Many older motherboards have Vista specific BIOS improvements or fixes that
you are likely depriving your customers of.
