word files conversion from pc to mac a problem

Posted: 11-17-2003, 06:42 PM
In our magazine production, copy is originally entered in Word 2002 on
a pc. I open files on my mac in Word 2001. Should I resave orig. pc
docs as Word for Mac 5.1 or 6.0 to access formatted text from within
Quark on the mac?

Have many problems importing correct style sheets into mac for Word.
Do I need to completely replace/rename style sheets in orig. pc docs
before converting them to Word mac files? I juggle between using
existing styles and new styles in 6.0 files. But it never really works
cleanly.

Realise this is complicated, but any help appreciated in digging away
at a solution.

What's probably going wrong is that default styles on Mac and PC you
are using have the same names and different settings. How normal is
your normal? Is your PC Heading 1 anything like the style of the same
name on your Mac?

Hie ye to Clive Huggan's "Bend Word to your Will" on the MVP site, and
consider why you should not adopt his approach to styles.

Once you have sorted out your style naming, I reckon you would be best
using Word v.X to be compatible with recent PC Office. If you are still
in the dark ages on old MacOS, then avoid Word 6 like the plague.

I can't help much with which Mac version of Word works best with which
Quark version. I only used Quark for one job ever. Didn't know whether
to laugh or cry. Fortunately the typesetter has switched to InDesign2,
which does a workmanlike job of preserving what it can of Word v.X
styles.
