Word quit on Search

You'll need to be much more explicit with your description of the problem...
The nature of the document & its content, exactly what steps you're taking
that cause the crashing, what steps you've taken to correct it as well as
the effects of those efforts. Also, please explain what you mean by "Word
2008 grammar quits instantly".

If you'll research the Forum you'll also find that the problem is obviously
not widespread or universal. Personally, I haven't experienced either in
Word 2004 or 2008 on several different Macs using various versions of OS X.

If you supply the requested details perhaps someone can help you get things
on the right track.

BTW: You aren't communicating with MS here - we're users volunteering our
time to assist other users as best we can. Slurs & venting simply cloud the
issue as well as sour the milk. You're perfectly entitled to your opinions
but if you're simply looking to gripe rather than seeking assistance there
are plenty of blogs & chat rooms that will serve the purpose better.

This is a tete document, format RTF or DOC.
An average document, with texte only. This happens with many documents, not with only one document. This happens since inception as said : namely a year with 2008.
This happened on my MAC G5 under Tiger
This happens on my new iMac under Leopard.
I called support several times : always the same reply :
"your normal doc could be corrupted".
As a remedy, I throwed the Word Preferences
(Users>Preferences>Microsoft), and I did it many
times.
You say it's not so widespread : I've seen several users having this problem here, and several forums where it's mentioned.
May I also tell you that Msoft support did at least acknowledge it was a know problem, that I should disable grammar check and only run orthographic check ?
In fact, when disabling grammar, it works.
That bug did not exist with 2004 (at least).
Msoft also told me it should be solved soon.
This was last SPRING. So I think I can gripe a little,
when the software official support tells that kind of thing, because I'm used to it.

Since problem occurs, I worked on 500 or 600 word documents…

Well, one point to clarify straight-away;

*Preferences* files & the *Normal template* are 2 completely separate &
distinct items. Deleting the Preferences does absolutely *nothing* to remedy
a problem with the Normal template or vice versa. You don't give any
indication of having taken the appropriate steps. Try the suggestions
offered here to see if it might improve the situation:

I didn't suggest that nobody ever has a problem (nor am I saying that the
software is without flaw), but as you yourself say it's a matter of "several
users" - several out of millions. And for those "several users" who do have
such problems the the source is invariably traced to errors in the local
installation rather than a "bug" in the program. Effective troubleshooting &
properly addressing those errors puts things back on track. But to
effectively troubleshoot any problems the matter needs to be clearly &
accurately communicated & the corrective actions need to be properly taken.

Bob,
I know deleting Normal.doc and ditching Microsoft Preferences are 2 differentes things.
What I can say is this :
- I deleted Normal.doc
- I deleted Microsoft Preferences
- I tried other operations (I cannot remember which)
- All this has been done with Microsoft support on the phone during the first 90 days of free support after buying 2008
- I insist these are well-known bugs, especially the Grammar check problem, as Msoft support told me it was identified as such and would be fixed very soon. Again, this was in may 2008… ;-)

Which I exactly did.
Problem is after doing that, I still have one "OldNormal.dotm" template in User Template, but no new "Normal.dotm" regenerated by Word…

And regarding grammar check, which I launched again, after 5 or 6 checkings, I have a dialog stating :
"A problem occurred with grammar check, Word closed this session."
This never occurred with Word 98 or 2004 (despite many other flaws, like the infamous dialog : "Too many windows opened, lack of memory, Word quits", when juste ONE windows is opened in Word, in a 4 Gb machine with no other application running…).
And this, as said, is a bug, identified as such by Microsoft support last year. Since then, it has never been fixed. Dozens of users reported it, Microsoft said, usually with Spanish language, and some with French language. Apparently, it doesn't occur in English. Funny, isn't it ?
