Workgroup computers not visible

I want to share information from my laptop with my
desktop. Both have Ethernet cards so I purchased a
crossover cable, ran the Setup Wizard, made the laptop
the host and the desktop the guest, gave them both the
same workgroup name (different computer name). However,
when I look at the workgroups on the network connections
I will only see the laptop on the laptop and the desktop
on the desktop. Troubleshooting says everything is fine
and the desktop is sending and receiving
information...the laptop is not.
What's wrong? Thank you in advance for your time.

I don't want to confuse the issue but I've had much better luck when
creating static addresses under the network IP Address tab. I would suggest
192.168.1.1 for the PC and 192.168.1.2 for the laptop. You might need to
add a Host name in the DNS Configuration (unique for each computer). If this
still doesn't work, add 192.168.1.1 to the DNS Search order.

The DHCP often doesn't work right in your situation. I've seen it over and
over.
