In Control Panel, Printers and Faxes do you have more than one printer defined? If so,
does one of them have a check mark on it (that would be the default printer). When you
right click on the default printer, you won't get the option to make it the default
because it already is. However, right clicking on the others should give you that option.

Try this again.
Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > right click the printer you want to
make default and click "set as default printer"
