X CPU usage

Hey folks, a question for you.

I installed Mandriva 2006.0 PowerPack, KDE 3.4 of course, onto one of my
computers, and when I ran top after the installation, the program shows
X consuming as much CPU time as is available to it. This isn't so much
of a problem to me right now, but if this problem is persistent of
course it's not a good thing.

First, here are the specs on the computer:

Motherboard: Gigabyte 6VTXD
CPU0: Pentium III, 933MHz
CPU1: None
Main Memory: 768 MB
Video Card: nVidia geForce2 MX 400

I restarted the system several times, and whenever I did, X would
continue to be the CPU hog. Just for kicks, I rebooted into init 3 (the
fancy one that Mandriva has, as opposed to the simple text-only terminal
version), and ran startx. No problems -- X was using 0.3% of the CPU
when it wasn't doing anything. I set the system to start at init 5 upon
reboot, and again, no problems. This is the session on which I am
writing this message.

I've read on-line, searching through the newsgroups and elsewhere, that
others have had problems with X taking up so much CPU time, but these
messages typicall talk about old driver versions for their video cards.
I have the opinion that I have a recent version of the driver -- the
one that came on the DVD -- and anyway, if this was a driver problem, it
would happen at every reboot, including the one on this session.

I don't tend to leave this computer running all the time, but I do run
it for 10 day stretches every two weeks. Fortunately, this isn't the
computer I do most of my work on, but I'd like to know why this is
happening. I'm not really a Linux newbie, since I've been around since
at least version 9.1 (those are the oldest CDs I have, anyway); on the
other hand, I learn what I need to know to get done my work, and that's
about it.

Thanks for any advice,

Cliff Hewitt

I have seen the problem several times. No idea what is causing it.
I always boot runlevel 3 and issue startx. I have all KDE start services
disabled, power off on monitor is disabled and screen saver is
disabled.

Still have had maxed cpu usages by X intermittenly. Since I boot at
init 3. Solution is a quick logout of KDE session and enter startx.

Downside is msec audit cron job could still be behind and makes my
system slow until it completes.

Solution, have system boot init 3 and remember to exit desktop when
going to bed.

Others have suggested shutting down Kat and removing it. The gist of the
message I've seen suggest it's resource hungry enough to noticeably slow
down the system.

Thanks Bit Twister.

This is the method I've been using; it seems to be the most reliable way
of solving the problem. I wondered if there was a more permanent
solution. Oh well.

I wouldn't mind having a look at why X does this, but that's a task for
when I have more time.

Thanks again,

Right, I saw this immediately when I installed Mandriva 2006.0, and I
was well-warned by other messages in this newsgroup. That was one of
the first things I uninstalled after watching it work continuously for
about an hour. Even then, however, top reported kded as that process,
whereas top shows that X is the one using so much of the CPU.

Thanks,

See if http://groups.google.com/group/alt.o...4?dmode=source
helps.

Thanks, no, I had already searched through that route, and don't believe
it to be related to a bewitching hour of 4 AM, when my logs are rotated.

I've now noticed this problem happen once when I ran harddrake, but
haven't much had the desire to try to replicate the problem.

Thanks,

Cliff Hewitt

I also had this problem. It seems to have disappeared after I downloaded
updated gtk libs from Mandriva.
