Vista creates log files of the installation as it proceeds. See:

After an unsucessful 32-bit installtion, reboot the machine from the DVD,
then go to a Command Prompt, under Repair options. Examine the setup logs -
probably C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log - to see what happened
at the end of installation. This may give you an idea just how far Vista
installation got, before it abended; and what the faulting comonent was.

If it is caused by a hardware incompatibility, you may have no choice.
Unfortunately you don't provide any details of the machine. Was it made by
one of the mainstream manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, etc?). What
peripheral devices are attached?

I did what you suggested, but the setupact.log doesn't provide me with any
information that could point me in the right direction. The last few lines
say..

Sorry for a lot of info, but I'm stumped here, my only option I can think of
is to download all the possible drivers for each device, unzip and chuck on
a cd to have in the drive during install and use as additional drivers....
or final option, just have the essential hardware connected whilst
installing.

Since the last post, and whilst I'm awaiting any more replies, I thought I'd
take it upon myself to obtain all the latest drivers from sites pertaining
to my hardware, and whilst trying to install the 32bit use the 'load driver'
option before install, after going through the drivers (all at once) I
managed to get it installed, I just don't know which one was causing the
issue to start with...

So, I think bottom line at the moment, if I want to do an install of it (or
re-install now, as the case may be) I'll have to have the same approach....

Now, begs the questions, under the EULA, I'm allows to make one back up
copy, I am wondering if there is a way to incorporate all my drivers onto
the dvd copy/backup?

Look forward to any replies...

Use Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image to make a complete image?
I don't know of any way to slipstream the new drivers into your installation
DVD.

If you're lucky the answer will leap off the page, like an explicit error
code (0xC0000005, HRESULT 0x80070005, etc).

More often, you need to infer the answer from what you find. So for example:
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log tells us "Setup has completed
phase 2". That's good information - now we know at least Phase 2 completes
okay. What about Phase 3 and Phase 4?? As described in the 927521 article,
susbsequent phases are loged in C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setupact.log,
C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setuperr.log, C:\WINDOWS\Panther\PreGatherPnPList.log,
etc - so, you'll want to examine these files too (if they exist) to form
theories about what setup was doing, when it failed.

There's a moderate complexity of hardware there. It's very likely the
problem is in hardware detection and/or incompatibilty with built-in 32 bit
drivers. So you would either:
- examine Setup's hardware detection logs for info;
- remove all superfluous hardware from the system, to minimise risk of
driver incompatibility;
- investigate updated drivers for your system's components and use updated
drivers during the installation process.
