XP & 2000 PC's on domain hang at login

Posted: 11-03-2003, 05:20 PM
I support several hundred PC's & have about a dozen right
now that hang the the "Applying Computer Settings" window
once the user inputs their ID, password & selects the
correct domain. Some users have waited up to an hour but
the PC never fully logs in & gets a desktop.
A "weird" work-around is to unplug the users NIC cable
allowing the PC/laptop to login with the local cached
credentials, re-insert the NIC cable once the user can
see the desktop, then have them log off & back on & the
PC logs in just fine. Everything is OK until the user
reboots or shuts down their PC.
We've tested with different logins, different domains,
different DC's, different network segments and nothing so
far has worked!! ANY IDEA's????
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm not knowledgeable about large networks but in Folder Options> View
there is a setting for the system to immediately check on available network
files and folders. I don't know if that setting applies in a domain setting but
on a large network, I imagine this process could take quite a bit of time to
complete. May want to take a look at that.

Also, you will probably want to ask this question in the
windowsxp.network_web newsgroup. The network gurus that hang out
there and would be able to address your issue more effectively.

The following URL leads to a page that contains links to all of the XP
newsgroups. There are two links for each topic: one for browser access,
the other will open the newsgroup in Outlook Express. "Networking and
the Web" is the top item in the middle column, "Being Productive":

Also make sure that all mapped drives still exist. I have seen windows
logon hang when the mapped drive tries to reconnect and fails due to the IT
dept. removing permissions for that particular person to log onto a
particular resource.
