XP-98 networking

Posted: 10-16-2003, 02:38 AM
I have a small home network with a 4 computer workgroup.
Three machines are running XP and one WIN98. The XP
machines can all see one another but cannot see the WIN98
machine (for which the File and Printer sharing options
have been properly set). The WIN98 machine can see the
others with no problem.
Any ideas on how to detect the WIN98?

I have seen this before, do you login to the 98 machine,
if so, put a matching user account in one of the xp
machines and then see if the XP machine can see the 98
machine. This worked for me, if it don't, then ping it by
IP, then by name and see if its a name resolution problem,
install netbui protocol if it is, that may help too?

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

When you say the XP machines cannot see the 98 machine, I
assume you are referring to from within the network
browser. From what you describe, chances are that the XP
machines can actually "see" the 98 machine, but simply
have not populated the Windows Network list. Try doing
the following on an XP machine:

1. Clicking 'Start'
2. Selecting 'Run...'
3. Type in (without quotes) '\\NAME' where NAME is the
name of the 98 machine
4. Press OK

If indeed, my theory is correct, then in a few seconds,
the 98 machine's file/print sharing window should appear.
This will also cause the network browser to populate the
98 machine quicker than it would have otherwise. Hope
this helps...
