XP Activation

Posted: 07-12-2003, 03:54 AM
I recently had to recovery my XP pro system using XP
backup ASR. After it was completed, about 2 weeks ago, my
system has required me to Activate XP 3 times. Each time
I had to use the telephone because I use internet access
via satellite and the satellite is not loaded.

Any thoughts.

On what? I don't see a question there to be answered. Are you having a
problem with your Windows installation?

XP Activation

Dear All

I hope someone in the NG can help me with this.

I recently upgraded my W2K with WXP. If turns out that
the software I got was a bootleg copy with a Volume
License.

I have since acquired a valid version of the software and
wish to upgrade my computer to this new version without
having to do a clean install.

I found a link that gave instructions on how to change the
product key so that I can re-activate the product using
the valid key. However, the program is looking for a
Volume License Key and not a retail key.

Soooo... Does anyone know how I can change XP to not be
recognised as a volume installation so that I can enter my
retail key. (If this is at all possible)

Or do I have to bite the bullet and do a clean
installation.

TIA

Using your new CD and Product Key, perform a "repair install".

XP Activation
Posted: 10-27-2003, 11:58 PM
Hello, I have a computer that had Windows XP on it
already and I reformatted. My friend came over with his
Windows XP Home CD to reformat for me. I was unaware
that my Product Key was on the side of my computer. I
tried to activate my computer and it says invalid because
it needs my friend's key to activate, not mine. He is
using it though...what should I do?

Jeff;
Reinstall again using the correct CD and Product Key.

A Repair Installation may also be an option:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.

The problem is....I bought an HP Pavilion 761n and the
computer didn't come with a Windows XP CD, it was
embedded in the HD. Anything I can still do?

Jeff --

If you reformatted your hard drive, and deleted the
HP recovery partition, you'll need to contact HP and
order a recovery CD from them. Your HP issued Windows XP
Product Key will only work with a HP recovery CD.
