Re: XP Activation/Reactivation

You may have to reactivate, at best, it will simply be a handshake between
two computers over the Internet. At worst, you'll be given a number to
call, you'll tell them what you have done and they'll give you a new
activation number over the phone.

When you install the new board and CPU, you will need to do a repair install
of XP as follows:
Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

As to moving a board and CPU to Windows 98 that's a rather general question.
Perhaps if you post the board and CPU, others who have used that
configuration with Windows 98 can respond. You will likely have to
reinstall in Windows to have it properly recognize the board and CPU.

Boot to the BIOS setup, set date and time and ensure disks are detected.
then Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk,

Boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then
after the license agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will
retain your existing software installations and most settings. But
Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1; and if you have
drivers that only arrived with that, like USB 2 ones, you will need to
update drivers for the devices concerned. You may find that things like
virtual memory settings and some aspects of appearance have reverted to
defaults

This should retain your activation status, though if you have never
registered you may have the setup suggest it now (don't bother). You
may nevertheless find you have made so many changes that you need to
activate again by phoning in, but that is no great hassle as long as you
are aware that the system may only boot to Safe mode until you have done
it.

Or if you want you can do a fresh clean install - as more than 120 days
will have passed, that activation would go through on the net just like
the first time.
