XP/antivirus program incompatibility

I have installed a home network. With eith Norton or
McAfee antivirus/firewalls installed and properly
configured (I think), I cannot access shared files in the
desktop computer from my laptop. I can use desktop
printers from laptop, surf the Web from both and view
shared laptop files from the desktop computer. Disabling
the programs doesn't help. I actually have to prevent
them from starting using selective startup, or remove
them from my hard disk.I have disabled the XP firewall
and enabled simple sharing. My file system is FAT32 on
this computer and NTFS on the laptop. I would appreciate
any advice. (I do not have both programs installed at the
same time).

I'm sure you have been told this before, but you're a
genius. IT WORKED. After hours on the phone with Symantec
techs., Microsoft techs., Netgear techs., and countless
searches nobody but you knew the answer. Thankyou very

You're welcome, Jerry. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve
the problem.

I learned about that fix from someone else in this news group, where
it comes up several times a month. I'd think that Symantec and
Microsoft should have already known about it, especially since it's in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
