XP Boot

After my PC wass really slow in booting and I reset, it
then hung at the end of diskchecking and now cannot boot
into XP. If I use logging mode it gets to windows\system32
\drivers\Mup.sys and stops.

I cannot get to the XP product ID (but I have the
original XP install disk and product key) so I cannot log
a support incident with MS.

Any suggestions?

Hello Kevin,

You might try booting to the Last Know Good Configuration to see if you can
boot successfully. If this does not work you may have corrupted the MUP.sys
file. Try to boot into safe mode and follow the steps listed in Article
541570. If this does not resolve the issue We will need more information
such as the exact error message (original) and any oteher messages caused by
the troubleshooting steps.

Since this occurred after chkdsk, you should run a diagnostic to be sure
your hard drive is not failing. Check the website of your hard drive
manufacturer for their diagnostic tools, make note of their instructions,
download their tools, make the boot floppy and run their diagnostic on your
hard drive to be sure it hasn't failed or is failing.

I had the same problem. My PC became very slow to boot using XP home. The
problem I found was due to my hard drive. If you leave the boot long
enough it might eventually go back into windows, though everything will
continue to be slow. At one stage I reset the ESCD in my BIOS which speed
the boot up, but only lasted a couple of boots.

In the end I left the PC (for about 30-40 mins) to boot into windows and
ran a bad sector check (without the file system error check selected).
This took quite a while to finish (4-5 hours). This seemed to solve the
problem and then I was able to run the system error check and defrag. So
far my PC has been booting ok again.

Next I think I'll run Bootvis to speed it up a bit more.

p.s. If you're not sure where to find the bad sector check, right click
on your hard drive (in my computer) and select properties > tools > check
now.

Help Please:

Windows XP Pro, SP2, P4, 2.4GHz, Asus P4S533 motherboard

Booting Problem which occurred after installing SP2.

Prior to SP2 during boot, Windows would sometimes (about 50% of the time)
respond with the message “Windows needs to check one of your drives”. At this
point, I could select either skip the check or perform the check. If I let
the check proceed, no errors were ever found. The system would then continue
booting and perform fine regardless of which selection was picked.

Since installing SP2, the initial Windows screen comes up quickly but then
turns to a black screen and stays that way for 7 minutes before displaying
the normal user login screen. No errors, no messages, just a black screen.
During the 7 minute period I see the hard drive access light illuminate but
only occasionally for the entire 7 minutes. Once the boot completes, the
system seems to operate normally.

Don’t know how to proceed since there are no messages or indications as to
what is wrong. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check Event Viewer for messages that occur at boot time. You may find hints
in these messages about what problem(s) are holding up the startup process.

Are you at all concerned about the repeated disk checks that are happening?
You'll find a report on what chkdsk discovered/fixed during the scan in
Event Viewer. It will be listed as a "WinLogon" event. Also... How is the
system powered down? Clicking Start> Turn Off or another way?

Another thought: Could go online and locate the disk tools offered by the
hard drive manufacturer. Use the non-destructive tests to check out the
drive's health.
