Sounds like you might have put a desktop.ini file in your Startup folder.
Click Start button, click Run,
type: msconfig
Then click the OK button. When the System Configuration Utility opens,
click the Startup tab. Then look through the list of Startup items and see
if there's a desktop.ini file. If there is, click to remove the check mark
to the left of it, then click the Apply and OK buttons, then reboot. On the
first reboot, you'll get a dialog box saying that you've selected a
Selective Startup, click the option NOT to show that dialog box again.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have looked where you
indicated and can not see a notepad file as you
suggested. Any other suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Double click the My Computer desktop icon, click the Tools menu, click
Folder Options. When the Folder Options dialog box opens scroll down to:
Restore Previous Folder Windows At Logon
Click to remove the checkmark to the left of that item. Then click the
Apply and OK buttons at the bottom of the dialog box. Then reboot. If THAT
doesn't fix the problem, and Notepad still opens at Startup. Does Notepad
itself open with no file, or does, a file open in Notepad? If a file opens
in Notepad, take note of the file name, then Click your Start button, click
Run,

type: regedit

Then click the OK button. When the Registry Editor opens look in the left
pane for the keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Select each of those keys, one at a time, by clicking on it, , and then look
in the right pane and see if there's a string with any reference to the file
that's opening in Notepad. If there is, right click THAT string with THAT
file name (NOT THE KEY IN THE LEFT PANE), and then left click Delete. Then
close the Registry Editor and reboot.

As always, before editing the Registry, click your Start
button/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and create a
Restore Point, in case you make a mistake editing the Registry, and want to
quickly revert back to a copy of the Registry just prior to your editing it.
