XP - CD & DVD NOT WORKING

Posted: 09-27-2003, 04:28 PM
MS XP
PLEASE HELP
After applying a few XP updates my CD & DVD drives refuse
to work on XP. They are shown as valid 'working' devices
and also list in My Computer, but refuse to read any CD's.

The same computer is set to dual boot with '98. If the OS
is '98 then there is no problem with the CD & DVD drives.

XP system restore makes no difference.

Any ideas?

Get your latest drivers from the CD and DVD manufacturer's websites.

If there aren't any (no drivers, not no website -- I won't believe you),
try telling Windows to "roll back" the drivers on the CD and DVD drives.
(Device Manager -> (drive) -> Properties -> Drivers -> Roll Back)

XP - CD & DVD NOT WORKING

Most of the time the problem is outdated software. When I
upgraded to XP from 98, my CD burner didn't work because
the Adaptec (aka Roxio) software was incompatible and had
been removed by the XP installer. I had to purchase new
software. I chose Hotburn for $20, and I can burn CDs
fine now. However, the software itself sucks so I don't
recommend it. Buy a different one.

My DVD player also would not play movies anymore, because
the DVD decoder software that my HP originally came with
was incompatible with XP. There were no free updates so I
had to purchase a new decoder, which also cost me $19.99.
You can check to see if this is the problem with your DVD
drive by going to the START menu, then RUN, and typing:

dvdupgrd /detect

(Note that there is a space after dvdupgrd and before the
forward slash.)

This will tell you if you need to upgrade your software.
If you do, you can type

dvdupgrd /upgrade

and the Windows Help & Support window will pop up and
recommend a new software option.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Sensa
