XP ..\config\system file corrupted, can't boot XP

Posted: 10-16-2003, 08:57 PM
Hi,

My son's PC appears to have a corrupted file -
\windows\system32\config\system. Suspect a virus.

When he tries to boot the PC it comes up with the message
about this file.

** Please can you advise me if the same file on another PC
can be used to overwrite this file? **

Also, is it possible to create an XP boot floppy, as he
can't get into a recovery mode screen as the corrupted
file stops him, even if he changes the BIOS to boot from
the set of CDs he had to create when the PC was bought.
(OEM installed XP)

My worry is that he will have to buy a new copy of XP and
create a new install, losing all of his files on the PC.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
BryanB

I have found a Microsoft article that mentions the error (a little down the
page in red);
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307545

Thiere is no shortage of mention of error on Google;
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...onfig%5Csystem

or shorter link;
http://tinyurl.com/r8dm

I don't know if this will help to access the machine, but XP boot-floppy (4
of) utility can be got from;
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

PS I read a couple of times that it is *not* a virus matter (three times
would have been better).

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit
