connected to a wireless router. My laptop (vista home premium) can access
the wireless router and access the internet but I can't get it to do file
sharing.

All i want to do is be able to access my usb external hard disk connected to
my desktop from my laptop. Can anybody please tell me how to do this usinh
my network?

also do i need a wireless card in my desktop?

any help appreciated.

Regards

Daryl,

If both computers can access the Internet, then you don't need more hardware.

Can you get the Vista laptop to access anything shared by the desktop? Does the
desktop share anything else? What is the exact error message or problem
observed when you "can't get it to do file sharing."?

Is the XP desktop running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, is it running Simple or
Advanced File Sharing? If Advanced, is a non-Guest account activated for
network access?

If you're using Guest for access, is the external hard disk shared with a
non-"$" share name?

I wrang microsoft and paid $80 for a quick an easy solution:
Simply map the IP address of the computer you want to connect to through
vista and ensure its a shared resource and it works a treat.

Thanks for sharing.

LOL.

$80 to tell you to use a fixed IP address. PTB was right.
