XP detects "new hardware" already installed and displays wizard

Posted: 07-24-2003, 05:59 PM
I installed a Canon multifunctional printer (Multipass
C5500). The installation went fine and it works fine. But
now every time I boot up, Windows runs its found new
hardware device wizard. It detects the printer but it
can't find a driver for it. If I cancel the wizard, the
printer still works fine. Is there anyway I can get
Windows to ignore this device? It's pretty annoying to see
the wizard each tin]me I boot up.

Thanks

Hi Larry,

This problem can occur when the printer driver is initially installed. The
printer installation program from the manufacturer does not enable the New
Hardware Wizard to finish its detection of the newly installed printer.

To work around this problem, enable the New Hardware Wizard to finish, even
though the wizard cannot detect a new printer.

New Hardware Wizard Detects Printer Device After Every Restart
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q298/3/70.asp

Checkpoint: Unhide hidden devices in the Device Manager, view the problem
devices and remove them manually there.

Go to Start/Run/CMD. At the command prompt, type the following commands and
press enter after each line:

set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1
set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
start devmgmt.msc

Click the View menu and select Show hidden devices. Right click the device
you want to delete and click Properties. Click the Details tab.

Select Device Instance ID. The value of Device Instance ID is the hardware
key of the device.

For example, if you see the value is Root\Image\0000, the full hardware key
is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\Image\0000

Then go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key. The data of the
Driver value is the software key of the device. Delete both the hardware
key and software key.
