XP Home SP2 upgrade to Pro using slipstreamed Pro SP2

Posted: 03-21-2005, 09:04 PM
Need to upgrade an XP Home with SP2 already installed, to Pro Edition.
Already have a physical Pro CD, so purchased Pro Upgrade key (using
additional key purchase option at MS website). Turns out the Pro CD is SP1
level (got upgrade error that computer version later than cd version). So I
slipstreamed SP2 and burned that to CD to have an XP Pro with SP2 CD. But
when I try to use the slipstreamed CD, I'm still getting message that
version on computer (XP Home) is later than my slipstreamed CD.

How can I upgrade (vs install over Home which would lose settings)

Since I installed SP2 I have also installed about 30 more
hotfixes/updates/patches/etc. (I counted them under \windows\) Could be you
have the same on your Home install and because of all the subsequent updates
the slipstreamed CD now appears 'older' than the Home installation.

I can't prove that, I'm only guessing here.

Perhaps you did not perform the original slipstream correctly.

To make your upgrade easier, create a new Windows XP Pro
CD with SP2 slipstreamed and then upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)

I agree with Carey on this one, seems the XP Pro CD created earlier did not
have SP2 installed. As far as the hotfixes preventing it, nope, as it would
also prevent you from a repair install on the same OS, which it never does,
and why you always have to reinstall all the hotfixes after doing a repair
and/or upgrade.

The nicest slipstreaming experience I have had is with AutoSteamer:

I have this identical problem. I used slipstreamed and the sp2 recommended
here, however, I encountered the following difficulties:
Needed to use DVD for disk (would not fit on cd),
Two nasty messages about "unavailability" of files during install,
cannot install iis from iso file generated by nero from the slipstream image
(old master xp pro will not install either).

repeated process twice with similar results

fyi

A correctly slipstreamed .iso will fit on a cd. Something went wrong. Why
not try slipstreaming with AutoStreamer?
http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html
It is a breeze to use and I have never seen it fail.

This resolved the dvd issue, however, my fundamental problem is the following:

from ms:
When you try to upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 2 (SP2) to Windows XP Professional SP2, you receive an error
message that is similar to the following:
The file 'file_name' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed. Type the
path where the file is located, and then click OK.
Note The file_name file may be the Csv.xs_ file, or it may be a different
file.

When this symptom occurs, you cannot continue with the upgrade.

Yikes!

Hi Carey,

I suspect I didn't. I thought perhaps post-SP2 hotfixes created issue, but
next day I brought in my own XP w/SP2 CD and that worked. Thanks for link,
we will try that next time.

Thanks to all who responded!

Regards,
Joan
