XP Home start up problems

Morning All,

For a while now I have had this error message come up twice as I start up my
PC. It says:-

svchost.exe
The instruction at "0x7c9100c8" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The
memory could not be "read".

click on OK to terminate program
click on CANCEL to debug program

Nothing happens or changes when I click on OK or cancel. The PC does still
start up, but I just want to know why this is happening, what has caused it
and can I fix it ? Can you help me with this ?

Also I've noticed my system restore feature doesn't work anymore (hasn't for
about 3 months now) and also if I choose the 'Help & Support' option from the
start menu, it always comes up with error message that Windows can't find
helpctr.exe. What has happened to my computer ?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Miss. Caroline Thom

When anyone is encounting problems like this the first thing I would check,
if I was going to diagnose and fix the problem, would be for any malware
possibly infecting your machine.

Do you have any Antivirus software installed? If so, are the latest updates
installed?

I would also check and make sure that Windows was up-to-date.

1.Clear the (IE) temporary Internet files and the history cache.
Click 'Start' and then click 'Run'... then type (or copy/paste)
"inetcpl.cpl" (w/out quotation marks) into the box, then click the 'OK'
button.
In Internet Properties panel 'General' tab, under 'Browsing history', click
'Delete...'button, in 'Delete Browsing History' panel, click the 'Delete
all...' button then place a checkmark into the box beside 'Also delete
files and settings stored by add-ons', Click 'Yes' and exit the Internet
Properties panel by clicking the 'OK' button.

2.Clean HDD
Click 'Start' and then click 'Run...' then type (or copy/paste) "cleanmgr"
(w/out quotation marks into the box, then click the 'OK' button. Select
your drive
(presumably WinXP (C and click OK.

3.Download/execute:
Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe
--and--
SuperAntispyware - Free

Good luck
