XP Home upgrade pricing

Posted: 08-25-2003, 06:06 PM
I have a couple of desktops, one came with XP and the other I upgraded to
XP. I would like to upgrade my laptop (it has WIN 98 SE) to XP. Does MS
offer any reduced rates for my situation. Do they offer any type of senior
discounts?

This link will take to the page for purchasing XP Home and has a link for
additional licenses:
http://shop.microsoft.com/Referral/p...p?siteID=11052
No senior discounts but the additional licenses are $15 less than the full
price for an upgrade.

There is a modest 15%, but you would probably do better at a discount
store. First make sure the machine is adequate - if a laptop that came
with Win98 it probably has nowhere near enough RAM (you want more than
128MB) and the CPU speed may be low too. then Read Gary Woodruff's
article on upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Sorry - no they don't

One problem with upgrading a laptop is that there are often
proprietary hardware and XP drivers may be hard to find
because the laptop manufacturer wants to sell you a new
machine and not give you new drivers for an older machine.

You can buy a Microsoft OEM XP CD for about 1/3-1/2 the
price. You have to have a clean hard drive to install, but
if you have a partitioned drive, you can install to a
freshly formatted C: drive.

The OEM CD is the same as a retail full except you don't get
tech support or the big books, just a little CD, COA and a
piece of paper. The OS cannot be moved.

Thanks for the reponses. I downloaded upgrade Advisor and looks like it
won't be a problem upgrading. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron, less then 2
years old.

CompUSA has a 30 percent off coupon this week on all MS software, I used it.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my post.

Regards

Thanks for the responses. According to upgrade advisor my Dell Inspiron
shouldn't have any trouble in an upgrade.

CompUSA has a 30 pct off coupon for all MS software this week, so I bought
an upgrade today for 69.00.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
